A Study of Support System for Facilitating Early Diagnosis and Intervention for Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Based on the Experiences and the Perceptions of Parents

Recently, there has been a dramatical increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders(ASD). Moreover, early detection and intervention are considered as important components for promoting positive outcomes of educational services. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to find how parents experience and perceive on the process of early diagnosis of their own children as having autism spectrum disorders and transition into the early intervention services. For the purpose of the study, a total of 10 parents of children with autism spectrum disorders were participated in focus interviews. Four themes and eleven sub-themes were emerging from the qualitative analysis of the interview transcripts. Four major themes are the following: (1) difficulties in the process of referral, (2) difficulties in the process of diagnosis, (3) difficulties related to the results, and (4) needs for establishing support system. Based on the result of the study, the implications to develop support system for facilitating early diagnosis and intervention for young children with autism spectrum disorders.
